The Portsmouth Alternative Scene
The Portsmouth Alternative Scene
Clubs:
Resurgence: Sunday nights once a month at Scandals. Goth/industrial/80s
Delight: Monday nights at Uropa. Alternative/indie night.
Connection: Thursday nights at Scandals. Indie.
Subversion: Friday nights at The Lounge (EQ). Indie/alt upstairs, metal downstairs.
Chaos: Saturday nights at the Albert Tavern. Alternative/indie night.
Saturday nights at the Frog on The Front. Rock, metal and alternative.Pubs:
There seems to be no one main alternative pub these days, instead there are several scattered around:
The India has a pre-Connection indie night every Thursday.
Deco (Formerly The Elms) has a pre-Subversion alternative night every Friday.
The One Eyed Dog has a pre-Route 66 alternative night with DJ Carl every Monday.
The Honest Politician also has a fairly alternative clientele.
Gig Venues:
The Guildhall: Occasionally puts on bigger "alternative" bands- the Manics, the the Prodigy, the Cure have all played there in the past and upcoming gigs include Bloc Party.
The Pyramids: Quite often puts on mid-range alternative bands (Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, The Coral, Funeral For a Friend etc) via PVC.
The Wedgewood Rooms: Has a very good reputation, especially for getting alternative bands before they get big and getting occasional "scoops"- Oasis, Killers, Primal Scream etc. PVC (ie Ian B), who pretty much runs the Portsmouth pro alternative gig scene, seems to read the music press even more obsessively than I do, since any band touted as being "on the way up" will almost inevitably play The Wedgewood Rooms. They also put on a fair few metal/punk/emo bands and local band nights.
The Frog On The Front: Messclean put on bands there every Friday night.
The Lounge: There are band nights at the Lounge once a month on a Saturday and also on Wednesdays.
The Registry: The Thursday Thing at the Registry often puts on live bands. On a Thursday, funnily enough.
